Tell me what you want, what you really really want

I was watching a promo of “The Secret” Home study course yesterday and one of the teacher’s is a supposed reverend somebody. He was saying that you can have everything you want. He then went on to say that basically heaven was all around you and a raft of other new age drivel. This reinforces my earlier warnings about “The Secret”. It is in my opinion a dangerous philosophy that is totally at odds with truth and God’s kingdom.

So to take a leaf out of my lovely wife’s book:
You can have anything you want, but not everything you want.
You have to pick what you want and decide what you will go without to achieve it.

Hello??

You have to pick what you want and decide what you will go without to achieve it.
Are you ready for that?? If you spent 40 years stuffing your life up are you willing to go without your drugs/food/sex/movies: whatever it might be, so that you can achieve something that will benefit you for the rest of your life??

Hello again??

There is no “secret”, there is no free lunch. If you will decide what you want and choose to give up other things to achieve the greatest desire, YOU CAN HAVE IT.

The question is do you really, really, really want it??

Getting what you want

Sometimes it does get in

I wish I could find a way to can whatever it is that people seem to get out of some of the things I teach. The email I got today from Trish was just amazing. She took on a deal that prior to my trading day she wouldn’t have looked at and made $404,000 IN ONE DAY!!
You can’t argue with tangible results like that.

But what is it that enabled her to listen to what I had to say and act on it when the next 20 people wouldn’t??

Well there is no easy answer. I could say it’s her personality type, her education or a raft of other things.
But I don’t think any of those are the real answer.
I will however say this: I don’t know Trish, I have only spoken to her once on the phone. And when Idid speak with her she came across as someone who was basically “happy”. She sounded like she enjoyed life. She laughed a lot during our brief conversation.

Now you might think well I’d enjoy life if i’d just made four hundred grand but that would be missing my point.
The point is that people who basically are happy, positive and “content”, get better results in every area of their life. They are less afraid to take risks, they get sick less often and they enjoy better relationships, jobs and financial outcomes.

So for you and I what it means is that we need to pursue those things that make us unhappy, deal with our demons and skeletons. This needs to be an essential part of our investing strategy. There is no point being miserable and running around trying to buy deals. Apart from anything else your negativity will emanate out of you to every agent, buyer and vendor you talk to so you are effectively sabotaging your own efforts if you don’t look at the things that stop you from living.

Now this doesn’t mean that we need to be swinging from the ceiling to succeed but understand that negativity will come across as insincerity and doubt and that will kill your efforts when negotiating and trying to build relationships with agents and vendors.

It may have only been a song title but there is a lot of power in the phrase “Don’t worry, be happy”.

Hello world!

The most important real estate in the world is right between your ears.

Now more than ever before it is understanding sound investing principles and having your head in a good space that will make the difference between failure and success in your life and in your investing.

Sometimes when things just aren’t going according to plan you need a lifeline.

On the one hand that might sound kind of obvious but I find that unless you decide what your lifeline is then you end up gravitating to things that are unhealthy.

For example I have chosen to make God my lifeline. How that looks for me is that when things are really bad I will pick up my guitar and spend time in worship.

(Now your thing might be a long walk, or a special place or a particular piece of music)

If I don’t choose to go to my lifeline however then I would naturally gravitate to anything that made me feel good. That might be alcohol, excessive food, drugs, pornography, fill in the blank.

It’s a never ending list of things really, most if not all of which are destructive when taken in excess or in some cases if indulged at all.

It is the absence of safe lifelines that creates 260 new porn sites a day on the net creating over $108 A SECOND in sales at the same time increasing divorce and sexual crime stats incredibly.

It is the absence of safe lifelines that has created 20.9% of kiwi’s to be officially obese.

It is the absence of safe lifelines that has made child abuse and murder a common occurrence instead of front page news.

So my point is we can choose to find a lifeline that works and is safe, or we can wait and see what life and society throws our way.

I highly recommend the former over the latter.
